World Lore
The world of Aetheria has a deep lore spanning five ages, multiple factions, ancient artifacts, and cosmic villains. This page provides an overview — for the full lore bible, visit the Lore portal page.
Cosmology
Aetheria exists on a continent surrounded by sea, with diverse biomes ranging from desert to arctic to jungle. The world is shaped by the interplay of mortal factions, ancient magic, and cosmic forces.
- The Forge of Binding — An ancient artifact at the heart of the world that shapes magic and items. Connected to the Aetherian Forge system.
- The Corruptor — The main antagonist of the main story questline, a growing corruption spreading across the continent.
- Elemental forces — Fire (Ashen Order), Nature (Grove), Ice (Frostbound), Water/Sea (Deep, Tidecaller's Children), Light (Celestial Court).
The Five Ages
| Age | Era | Key Events |
|---|---|---|
| First — The Shaping | Pre-history | The gods shape the world; the Corruptor first rises and is bound |
| Second — The Celestial War | Ancient | Azrakael falls; the Seal of Binding is forged; King Mordreth seals the Corruptor's first manifestations and loses his kingdom to the sea |
| Third — The Kingdoms | Long era | Towns founded, factions formed, songstones cut, the sealkeepers sworn |
| Fourth — The Awakening | Present | The Corruptor stirs; wards fail across the continent; the player's story begins |
| Fifth — The Age of Mortals | After the finale | The Corruptor's avatar destroyed; the seals unneeded; Zariel mortal; the towns remember |
Magic System
- Vocations — Sorcerer (offensive magic), Druid (healing/nature), Knight (melee/tanking), Paladin (ranged/hybrid), Monk (martial).
- Spell categories — Attack, Healing, Support, Conjuring (runemaking), Rune usage, Familiar, Party, House.
- Magic level — Increased by spending mana on spells. Higher magic level = more damage/healing.
- Soul points — Used by knights/paladins for crafting and conjuring. Regenerate on a separate timer.
Artifacts
- Forge of Binding — Shapes the Aetherian Forge system, item affixes, and Forge Relics.
- Ancient relics — Recovered through main story quests, used to combat the Corruptor: the Seal of Binding, the Tidecaller's Amulet, the Key of Ascension.
- Prophecy Verses — nine readable relics carried by the arc-lords; together they retell the whole story. Tracked in the Prophecy Codex; donatable at the Hall of Songstones.
- Mordreth's Tomb Tablets — three tablets in Dunespire's deep tomb recording the Drowned King's first sealing.
- Forge Relics — 9 currency items (Forge Shard, Forge Crystal, Chaos/Exalted/Void/Divine/Binding/Corrupt Embers, Mirror Shard) connected to the Forge of Binding.
Villains
- The Corruptor — Main antagonist, spreading corruption across the continent. Fought in the final main story quests.
- World bosses — Powerful bosses in each town's deepest zone, tied to the town's lore.
- Faction enemies — Opposing factions (Crown vs Syndicate, Grove vs Ashen Order) create political conflict.
The Prophecy & the Thin Places
- The Prophecy — a promise the gods hid in nine verses, scattered across the world. Collected verses are recorded in the Prophecy Codex; bringing the Ninth Verse to Zariel earns the Versekeeper title.
- Thin places — where the boundary between worlds is worn: Silverwood's groves, the Soul War battlefields, the tomb beneath Dunespire. The deepest dungeons sit on them.
- King Mordreth — the Drowned King, ruler of the first mortal civilization. He sealed the Corruptor's earliest manifestations at the cost of his kingdom — the green lands dried to salt flats and the sea took the coast.
- Environmental lore — plaques, memorials, and inscriptions in the world can be read: tomb tablets, wanted boards, shrine markers, and zone-entry whispers tell the world's story to those who look.
