Lore of Aetheria
The world bible — cosmology, magic, and the forces that shape the continent.
The Celestial Hierarchy
The Corruptor — Morgaroth, the Unmaker
Before the gods shaped the world, there was the Void — a formless darkness that existed before light. From this Void emerged The Corruptor, known in the oldest texts as Morgaroth, the Unmaker. It is not a god, nor a demon, nor a dragon. It is the antithesis of creation itself — a sentient darkness that seeks to unmake all that the gods have built.
The Corruptor cannot enter the mortal realm directly. It works through corruption — twisting the hearts of mortals, poisoning the land, and awakening ancient evils sealed beneath the earth. Every corrupted creature, every failing ward, every dark ritual in the world traces back to its whispered influence.
The Celestial Court
The gods dwell in the Celestial Citadel — a fortress-city above the clouds, accessible only through the Altar of Ascension. The celestials are their servants, winged warriors who enforce divine will.
- Archangel Zariel — Commander of the celestial host
- Seraphiel — Weapon master of the Citadel
- Uriel — Rune master, keeper of wards
- Azrael — Celestial of death, guide of souls
- The Fallen One (Azrakael) — Once the greatest celestial, now fallen
The Fallen One — Azrakael
Azrakael, called The Fallen One, was once the greatest of the celestials — Zariel's equal in battle, Metatron's equal in wisdom. He was cast out of the Celestial Citadel for attempting to seize the power of creation itself, believing he could reshape the world better than the gods.
Azrakael fell into the abyssal rift below the Citadel, where he encountered the Corruptor's presence. Rather than being consumed, he made a pact: he would serve as the Corruptor's lieutenant in the celestial realm, corrupting celestials into fallen angels, while the Corruptor worked upon the mortal world below.
The relationship: The Corruptor is the primordial power; the Fallen One is its most powerful servant. They are not the same being. Slaying the Fallen One severs the Corruptor's direct influence in the celestial realm, but the Corruptor itself must be confronted through the mortal world.
The Magic System
The Corruption
The Corruptor's influence manifests as a dark, spreading taint that:
- Twists creatures — animals become aggressive, monsters grow stronger
- Poisons the land — swamps grow toxic, ice becomes unnatural, earth rises
- Weakens wards — ancient seals crack and fail, releasing sealed evils
Wards and Seals
Wards are protective markers placed over sealed evils. They are physical objects (Frostbound Remnants, wardstones, songstones) that must be maintained or restored.
Seals are more powerful bindings that trap greater evils. The Seal of Binding (from the Drowned King) is the most powerful — it can bind even the Corruptor's avatar.
Void Relics
Fragments of broken seals. The Drowned King's seal shattered into Void Relics that mummies carry through the desert. Recovering them allows the seal to be rebuilt.
